Today I'm The Consumer - Scary Isn't It ?

I woke up this morning and did what I usually do, check email, check the RAIN, check my web stats, email a couple of folks and watch some CNN.  I'm boring in the morning.  Later I get to dodge bullets.  That's fun.  Ok, back to the show......

Yesterday I received a couple of documents appointing me into court cases outside of my companies MLS area.  No big deal.  That has happened before and I will usually consider refering the filed operations portion out and just do the trustee work myself.  Maybe I will join that local board and do the work myself.  It depends.

I remembered TLW's blog from a couple of days ago about Raingle not Google and instead of using Google to try and find some people to interview, I searched ActiveRain. Today, I was the consumer and was looking at the site through a different pair of eyes.

I didn't find what I was looking for, but did see something interesting.

First, there were very few agents in the area I was looking.  There were no agents with an REO or distressed asset background.  Foreclosure.com and realtytrac here I come.

Second, the agents that were there didn't have a picture or logo posted and had very little information about themselves.  One still had the "instruction" text from A/R posted under their bio.  One agent did have a little info, but as a consumer I was a little turned off by the agents "specialty"

"I specialize in all areas of buying and selling"   WHAT ?

Boys and girls, I have been doing this a long time and can think of a dozen areas of this business where I know enough to get me into a lot of trouble.  Probably not going to call this person for an interview.  My first impression is that they don't have any specialty and are probably running in 75 directions.  Not what I want or need.

I want to wrap this all up and make a point, but I don't really know how.  I guess I would say that, from the consumers point of view, the agent profile is every bit as important as blogging and getting good Google rankings.  They need to see the real you in your profile.

I specialize in everything.

I give great service.

I want to be your agent for life.....

.....are not really getting me, the consumer, to pick up the phone.

One thing that I am definitely doing this weekend is reviewing MY profile.

I can see where this person's intentions were, but I can also imagine how soon he'll get into trouble when someone takes him up on his miraculous offer.

Rich, I had a similar experience trying to find an agent for friends of mine who were looking for an agent out west in a fairly small town.  I like to be able to get a feel for someone before I even contact them, and that's what out AR profiles and blog posts ought to do for our blog buddies out there.  Nice post.

Well done Rich. Thre are certainly some gapping holes in areas when you try to locate a pro on AR by demographics geographics.. I'm not going to look today but based on some of my past research I would bet there are 45,000+ profiles on AR with out any information, including a picture, just the basic to get signed on.

I think I'll work on my profile this weekend too. They just updated the editor so we have a few more tools to play with. Good luck dodging bullets today:)

You raise a very good point.  We are not all things to all people.  I have chosen to specialize only in buyer representation. It is sort of like going to a specialist rather than a general pratictiioner type doctor.  I am afraid there are a lot of agents that try to do more than they can do competently.  This only hurts the image of the real estate profession in the eyes of the consumer.

Good reminder.  When I joined Active Rain, I didn't know what it was or what it did.  Now I do.  Time for a rewrite.

Thanks for the comment on specialization. Do the people who "specialize" in everything believe it, or are they stooopid? If I have a specialty, it is senior housing in the Sun Cities of Arizona. I do "specialize" in NOT doing things I don't understand, land, foreclosure, shortsale etc.

Oops!!My comment should read geographics NOT demographics. That's what I get for commenting before I've finished my coffee.

Good point and you said it so well.  The state of California has about 15 pages of agents listed without pictures or more than a few words if that in their profile.  You don't have to be Einstein to figure out that isn't going to attract a consumer to your post.  Duhhh....

I am going to break "Rain Protocol" and thank everyone for stopping by here as a group.  Now I just need to decide if I email the people with the bad profiles and ask them to update so I can possibly refer them some deals.

I wonder how long it would take to email 45,000 people?

Hmmm...you would be doing them a huge favor.  I think you should take the time to do it, Rich.  Think what a public service you would be performing for both the offending profiler and AR.  You should also offer to assist them in anyway possible.  That would really promote goodwill.

Great suggestion.  Let us all know how it turns out.

I opine that to receive the business loans from banks you should have a great motivation. Nevertheless, one time I've received a credit loan, because I wanted to buy a building.
