I guess today is the day to blog spill. It is kind of like a brain dump, but different.
Back when I was living in Virginia my neighbor taught me how to cook a turkey on a charcoal grill. Now it is a tradition for Thanksgiving and Christmas dinners at my house. This Thanksgiving I am going to my parents house and am, again, doing the bird.
I do a 18-20 LB bird.
You need the following:
- Bird
- 2lbs. bacon
- 2 bottles of BBQ sauce
- 1 can chicken broth
- 1 stick of butter
- Remove the neck, etc. from the cavity.
- Clean bird with water
- Put butter in cavity
- Wrap bird in bacon
- Set grill for indirect grilling
- Put drip pan w/ chicken broth under the bird
- Brush BBQ sauce all over bird
- Add new coals every hour
- Baste every 20-30 minutes
Bird cooks about 20 minutes per pound.

Speaking of turkeys.
I heard or read recently a great story about some pranksters who snuck a Cornish Hen into the body cavity of some poor lady who was cooking her very first turkey.
When she pulled it from the oven they told her she had cooked a pregnant turkey and she believed them for for a few minutes until they all fell out laughing.
Great sounding receipe, I'll give it a try some time soon. I've done the bacon and red onion before but never with BBQ sauce.
And Jim Lee - that was a blonde joke. People send me blonde jokes all the time. I don't know why.
A grilled turkey is like non other. It's a good thing you like to make it because you have been drafted for the Holidays. Plus it free's up the oven for all the sides.
